The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a national program which is designed to identify & developNietzsche tells us that there is a great loneliness in the human heart. This more than anything is the root cause of the longing for God. Nietzsche felt himself to be alone and Zarathustra suffers great isolation. Aloneness is a recurrent motif in The Rope Dancer; Rick almost dies alone when Rory leaves him on the slopes of Khan Tengri; Rick’s father collapses alone in the back-yard and then dies in the solitude of his madness; Sara dies by herself on the mountain; Rick begins the novel alone and finishes it alone. Without God we exist at the edge of the void. Thus Zarathustra asks, “…where does man not stand at an abyss? Is seeing itself not – seeing abysses?” (Nietzsche 1883-5, p.177). How do we deal with this without going mad? The first and most common way is not to look, to adopt a religious faith, or, more recently, use the opiates of consumption and television. The Apollonian solution, which is better than pretending the abyss isn’t there, is to hide the abyss with artistic beauty, to focus on appearances, but of course to do so is to rely on art to make bearable the Dionysian insight that it is better “…not to be born, not to be, to be nothing” (Nietzsche 1872, p22). A further alternative is the way of Socrates: the belief that reason can make sense of human experience. At root, however, human experience doesn’t make sense – it is chaotic and irrational. This is what Hamlet and Dionysiac man understand: “…both have truly seen to the essence of things…and action repels them; for their action can change nothing in the eternal essence of things, they consider it ludicrous or shameful that they should be expected to restore order to the chaotic world. Understanding kills action, action depends on a veil of illusion…True understanding, insight into the terrible truth, outweighs every motive for action…” (Nietzche1872, p.39). It is this that Rick glimpses when left alone on the slopes of Khan Tengri, and it is the terror of this insight that paralyses him far more than his injuries.Jennifer Finney Boylan Op-Ed article cites news that College Board is rolling out complete do-over of the SAT test; describes her own stressful experience taking the SAT; argues exam will still be inaccurate measurement of student potential, even with its changes, and should be done away with once and for all. In 1957, the first satellite was short into space from the Baikonur Space Centre, which lies in the steppeland of Kazakhstan.Taking part of this summer program allowed me to get a college experience. We lived on the campus, slept in the dorms, had to take courses we chose and learnt from passionated professors. The most striking thing for me was the relationship between students and professors. We had the possibility to debate and talk to them freely whereas in France there is a big gap between students and teachers. That was an other spark, that was what I wanted! I’ve been good in school and working very well, but suddenly something different was in perspective: I could have a one to one relationship with the teachers. They weren’t there just to give me marks, they wanted to share their knowledge, and were ready to involve you in their way of seeing things! That changed my way of seeing education. In 1890 and 1891 some of her poems were published. They received a great response but no more were published until 1955. A sepal, petal, and a thorn--Upon a common summers morn--A flask of dew-- A bee or two--A breeze-- a caper in the trees--And I am a rose!Dickinson's poems are timeless and will always leave one bewildered and amazed.
